Top Four Tips to Keep Your Oral Appliance Clean
Have you recently become a Renew Sleep Solution patient?
Or maybe you are considering oral appliance therapy to improve your sleep by treating your mild-to-moderate obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?
If so, you might be wondering the most efficient way to maintain and keep the oral device clean.
The acrylic and, in some cases, the soft liner of the oral appliance have a very important job to do as they work towards moving the lower jaw slightly forward to prevent the soft tissue at the back of the throat area from collapsing the airway and obstructing airflow.
So, it is essential to keep your oral device in tip-top condition. Here are 4 top tips on how to keep your oral appliance clean.
Brush Them Gently
Brush the oral appliance gently with the brush enclosed in your retainer case and/or with a soft bristle brush.
You will be able to remove your device every morning and carry out your own dental hygiene routine, which is an ideal time to clean your oral device.
Don’t use toothpaste to brush your device because the abrasives in toothpaste can cause scratches and potentially damage your device. Use a soft toothbrush and water, with gentle brushing motions on your device.
Only Wear Your Oral Appliance on Clean Teeth
It is very important to clean your teeth before you wear your device each night.
If not, you will not only experience discoloration and strong odors, but also increase the amount of bacteria on your device.
Store Your Oral Appliance Properly When Not in Use
Do you have the habit of taking your oral appliance out and leaving it uncovered on your nightstand or next to the bathroom sink? This is a sure-fire way for your device to breed bacteria.
To avoid collecting bacteria on your appliance, always rinse your device off with water after removing from your mouth so that your saliva doesn’t dry onto the appliance.
After cleaning your device, we recommend storing it based on your device specifications.
You should never store your device in any type of mouthwash. The alcohol and other chemicals in most mouthwashes will damage the device and void the warranty.
To maintain fit and longevity of your oral appliance, avoid placing it in direct sunlight, leaving it in your vehicle, and/or using hot or boiling water to clean your device.
DO NOT EVER SUBJECT THE DEVICE TO HEAT! It can warp the device.
