Five Common Sleeping Problems and What They Could Mean for Your Health
Trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep is certainly not uncommon. Many people report having a restless night or two, as well as unusual nighttime behaviors. These might be night sweats, snoring, or active movements that can hinder their ability to rest well.
But while many of these common sleeping habits can seem innocent and common enough, they could be signs of a bigger problem.
Here are five common problems and behaviors that people undergo when they are fast asleep, as well as what you need to look out for when these behaviors are present.
Pay Attention to These Unusual Nighttime Behaviors
1. Night Sweats
Excessive sweating at night may be common in the summer when inside and outdoor temperatures are at the peak.
But if they happen without reason, they could be a sign of other health conditions.
Night sweats are a common symptom of:
- Stress or anxiety
- Hormonal imbalances
- Stomach issues such as gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD)
- Even some types of cancers including lymphoma and leukemia
So be wary of too much sweating at night, especially if your room temperature is under control.
2. Snoring and gasping
Snoring and gasping are very common symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), which is a life-threatening condition when left untreated.
OSA links to:
- Type 2 diabetes
- Mental illnesses like depression or anxiety
- Even heart issues like stroke or heart attack
Therefore frequent snoring with gasps for air should never be overlooked.
3. Tingling leg sensations
Do your legs start to tingle or feel “creepy crawly” when you are stationary and without movement for long periods of time?
It could very easily just be that your legs fell asleep, but it could also be a sign of restless leg syndrome. If these tingling sensations are chronic and common, and if you notice other symptoms like disrupted sleep and daytime fatigue, it may be time to see your doctor.
4. Frequent bathroom trips
If you’ve had too much of any liquid leading up to bedtime, you can probably expect to make frequent bathroom trips during the night.
But if it’s happening on a regular basis, with more than three or four trips each night, it could be a sign of something else. You might have a condition like an enlarged prostate, diabetes, or problems with your kidney’s ability to function.
Simply put, if it happens multiple times per week for several weeks in a row, it’s time to see a doctor.
5. Morning headaches
A morning headache could be a sign of something simple, like having too much alcohol to drink the night before.
But it could also be a sign of a sleeping disorder like obstructive sleep apnea. If you have chronic morning headaches with no explanation, it’s time to get tested for OSA.
Essentially, any sleeping behavior that leaves you feeling tired and fatigued deserves a closer look.
From waking up with a roaring headache, to sweating and snoring all night long, these little behaviors may be your body’s way of telling you something is wrong.
So never ignore the signs, and if you think there’s a problem, seek help. By seeing a doctor, and getting a potential sleeping disorder or health issue under control, you can ensure plenty of well-rested nights in the future.
