Three Dangerous Sleep Myths to Ignore

There are all sorts of rules and guidelines when it comes to getting a good night’s rest. We’ve all heard that a glass of warm milk can help you sleep, or that you should try to get at least eight hours of sleep every night. And for the most part, many of these guidelines are wholly accurate.

However, there are a few sleep myths that won’t help you rest well.

So with this in mind, make sure you ignore the following myths that might not actually help you sleep soundly, and may even affect your sleep quality, and your health.

 

Don’t Believe These Sleep Myths

Myth Number 1: You can catch up on sleep you lost

Maybe you had to stay up late for a work project, or just had an active weekend, and didn’t get all the hours of sleep you needed. You can always sleep in the next day, or take a few naps, and catch back up, right?

Not necessarily.

Our bodies and brains are hardwired to follow an internal clock. So a regular sleeping routine is essential to allow us to feel at our best. As such, when you miss a few hours of sleep, or stay up late for a night or two, it could take days to catch back up.

Your better option is to stick to a regular sleep schedule whenever possible. So revert back to your old routine and schedule immediately after a late night out.

Myth Number 2: A longer sleep is always better

There’s a reason why eight hours of sleep every night is the gold standard for sleep routines.

Too little sleep can obviously wreak havoc on your cognitive abilities and energy levels. But, too much sleep can also have its own set of drawbacks as well.

In fact, the National Institute for Health and Welfare conducted a recent study that proves this. They found that people who slept much longer than the recommended eight hours of sleep per night were more likely to have cognitive and memory defects than those who stuck to an eight hour nightly schedule.

So enjoy your sleep, but don’t overdo it – too much sleep can actually be a bad thing.

 

Myth Number 3: Snoring and sleep apnea isn’t that serious

One of the most dangerous sleep myths floating around is that because snoring and obstructive sleep apnea are so common, it’s something you can ignore. But this couldn’t be further from the truth!

Obstructive sleep apnea affects virtually every aspect of your health, from your risk for life-threatening heart conditions, to your waistline and BMI, to your mental focus and clarity.

In essence, when you have obstructive sleep apnea, it doesn’t matter how long or how often you sleep – you are not achieving quality rest, and your health will suffer as a result.
